Welcome to ‘Teach about Alcohol’ – an educational resource to do with young people and alcohol.

In 2005 about seventy per cent of Sweden’s ninth-grade school pupils consumed alcohol. At the same time it became apparent that forty per cent of them had had no school education on alcohol whatsoever.

School reaches all young people at an age when they are trying out and developing their own identity. For this very reason there are great opportunities for shaping the future behaviour patterns of pupils. The school curriculum prescribes the goals within the area of alcohol that the pupils shall achieve. Nothing is said, on the other hand, on how these objectives shall be achieved or with what resources. This means that it is up to the teachers to handle this task on the basis of their own teaching competence. ‘Teach about Alcohol’ is designed to stimulate and guide school staff in their worthwhile and active preventive work concerning alcohol consumption.

‘Teach about Alcohol’ is designed to be adapted to differences amongst young people in respect of alcohol consumption and receptiveness to arguments. The exercises are therefore divided into four educational levels that take account of different circumstances in young peoples’ lives and their drinking habits.

An initiative from the drinks industry ‘Teach about Alcohol’ is a project run by the Swedish Spirits & Wine Suppliers (SSWS). SSWS is working actively on a large number of issues of common interest to the wines and spirits industry in Sweden. One of these areas is to work for a healthy drinking culture in the society that the association’s members are self-evidently part of. A healthy drinking culture means for SSWS, among other things, that young peoples’ lives shall be free of alcohol.

Today ‘Teach about alcohol’ have reached over 80 percent of all Swedish upper level of compulsory schools and upper secondary schools. Which means that over 600 000 pupils potentially have had the chance to participate in the school program.
